Für die Zukunft könnte das bedeuten, daß stabile Lebendimpfstoffe mit abgeschwächten Erregern schnell und relativ einfach hergestellt werden können. Oder daß spezielle genetisch zugeschnitte Grippeviren als Genfähren etwa bei der Therapie von Tumorpatienten angewendet werden können.

Das glauben zumindest die US-Forscher um Dr. Yoshihiro Kawaoka von der Universität Wisconsin in Madison. Sie haben die Viren durch Einschleusen kreisförmiger DNA-Abschnitte, Plasmide, in humane, embryonale Nierenzellen produziert. Bis zu 50 Millionen Viren pro Milliliter Zellkultur sind so entstanden (New Scientist 163/2198, 1999).

Ein weiterer großer Fortschritt ist die Entwicklung einer intranasalen Influenza Vakzine, die den Verlauf der Infektionskrankheit deutlich mildert.

Madison (eb). For the first time scientists have succeeded in causing a host cell to construct a complete Influenza Type-A virus from introduced genes. This could mean that stable live vaccines with weakened pathogens could be produced quickly and relatively easily in the future. Or that special, genetically cut flu viruses may be used as gene ferries as, for example, in the treatment of tumor patients.

At least, this is what the U.S. researchers connected with Dr. Yoshihiro Kawaoka, of the University of Wisconsin in Madison, believe. They produced the viruses by transferring circular DNA segments, plasmids, into human, embryonic kidney cells. In this way, up to 50 million viruses per milliliter of cell culture were created (New Scientist 163/2198, 1999)

A further great advancement is the development of an intranasal influenza vaccine, which significantly moderates the course of this infectious illness.

Autologous and Heterologous Blood Transfusion in Head and Neck Cancer Surgery

The use of heterologous blood has risks other than immunosuppression, including blood-borne infections and transfusion reactions. For these reasons, preoperative autologous blood donation has gained popularity. The relationship between autologous blood transfusion and cancer recurrence has not been well studied. It has been suggested that even autologous blood transfusion may have immunomodulatory effects, possibly because of changes that occur during the storage and processing of blood products.[17,18] The effect of autologous blood transfusion in surgically treated patients with SCCHN has not been examined. Our goal was to determine if the use of autologous blood diminishes the risk associated with heterologous blood transfusion in patients with SCCHN.
